Low-digestible carbohydrates: the regulatory framework.

نویسنده

چکیده

Legislation is described that impacts on the use of low-digestible carbohydrates in foods. This includes controls on the use of these carbohydrates, mandatory labeling concerned with gastrointestinal effects, nutrition labeling, and nutrition and other claims. Regional differences in approach to legislation have led to inconsistencies in the information that must be provided to consumers, even for the same food products. Also, within regions, different regulations apply to food carbohydrates that may be classified similarly from the physiological perspective. Consistency of food labelling globally and in application to similar carbohydrates would benefit from greater attention to the underpinning science.

Tolerance of low-digestible carbohydrates: a general view.

The tolerance of low-digestible carbohydrates (LDCs) may be measured as the potential to cause abdominal symptoms and laxation. Tolerance of any one LDC is determined by its concentration in the food product eaten, the amount of the food product eaten, the frequency of eating the food and the consumption of other foods (increasing tolerance) and water decreasing tolerance). Added to these, indi...

Beneficial health effects of low-digestible carbohydrate consumption.

Low-digestible carbohydrates represent a class of enzyme-resistant saccharides that have specific effects on the human gastrointestinal tract. in the small bowel, they affect nutrient digestion and absorption, glucose and lipid metabolism and protect against known risk factors of cardiovascular disease. In the colon they are mainly degraded by anaerobic bacteria in a process called fermentation...

Workshop: consumption and consumer perceptions.

There is relatively little published information regarding consumer perceptions of the possible health benefits or occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms following consumption of low-digestible carbohydrates (LDCs), in particular polyol sugars. This workshop focused on how consumers perceive the possible health benefits of LDCs, their reactions to any `adverse' symptoms following LDC consumpti...

Response of hexokinase enzymes and the insulin system to dietary carbohydrates in the common carp, Cyprinus carpio.

The response of the common carp to diets with varying amounts of digestible starch, provided either as pea meal (LP, HP, 30 and 46% peas, respectively) or as cereal (LW, HW, 30 and 46% wheat, respectively), was studied and compared with the response to a carbohydrate-free protein-rich diet (CF). Here we focused on the utilisation of dietary carbohydrates by examining the relationship between di...

Evidence supporting oral sensitivity to complex carbohydrates independent of sweet taste sensitivity in humans

Compared to simple sugars, complex carbohydrates have been assumed invisible to taste. However, two recent studies proposed that there may be a perceivable taste quality elicited by complex carbohydrates independent of sweet taste. There is precedent with behavioural studies demonstrating that rats are very attracted to complex carbohydrates, and that complex carbohydrates are preferred to simp...
